In the city of Prizren, the tradition of throwing the “iftar ball” is still being kept alive, heralding the arrival of the time when fasting people can break their iftar during the month of Ramadan.
The task of practically continuing this almost forgotten Ramadan tradition was taken on by activist Varis Hashimi, who for eight years has been taking two firecrackers with him before every iftar during the months of Ramadan and climbing the castle despite the weather conditions and the difficult walk to the cannon that has been inside the castle for centuries.
He says that this tradition of announcing iftar with the roar of cannon from the castle was created in the early 18th century by a group of soldiers during the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
In Prizren, the historic city with over 30 mosques, Ramadan is passing in a different atmosphere than other cities in Kosovo, where almost every social activity ceases at iftar time, and fireworks from the castle and cannons can be heard from all sides. / Kukes Television
